Poultry Research Institute Jabba Mansehra

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Poultry Research Institute was established via a project ‘Establishment of Poultry Research Institute at Jaaaba Mansehra Hazara region”. The project started in 2009 and completed in 2013 while converted into non developmental phase in July, 2014.

It is the only research institute of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is actively involved in research and developmental activities for uplifting the poultry (commercial and rural) sector of the province. The institute is mainly focusing for the development with special emphasis on the production enhancement of rural poultry sector of the province for poverty alleviation in order to uplift the socio-economic status of the rural population.

This institute has well defined task of responsibility to disseminate the high quality poultry Breeds (in term of egg production) to the local community to increase their source of income in comparison with already available local low productive chicken breeds.

The institute is providing disease diagnostic facilities to densely populated commercial and local farmers of Hazara division in order to minimize the considerable losses being harbored by the Poultry having quantifiable economic impact.

 

OBJECTIVES

        1.    Productivity Enhancement of the rural poultry population.

        2.    To carry out problem oriented research in different disciplines of commercial and rural poultry.

        3.    To provide disease diagnostic surveillance and control facilities to Poultry Sector (Commercial & rural).

        4.    Human Resource Development specially women folk of the province & other rural communities in poultry sector.

        5.    Collaboration with national and international organizations involved in the development of poultry sector.

 

MISSION/VISION

Boost poultry development in a policy environment through public investment and inducing private capital/ initiatives in the sector for poverty alleviation, employment Generation, food security and generation of exportable surpluses.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES UNDER ANNUAL TECHNICAL PROGRAM

Research Studies on the Annual Technical Program during 2016-17 are:

1.    Prevalence of Avian Influenza (H9) and Newcastle disease virus circulating in Poultry Population of Hazara Division in Collaboration with NRLPD, Islamabad.

2.    Prevalence of Invasive and Non Invasive Escherichia coli from farm and Household water samples.

3.    Research Proposal; Comparative Productive Performance of Two Different Poultry Breeds (RIR and Black Astralorp) at Poultry Research Institute Jaaba.

            4.    Maintenance of Gene Bank of Various Chicken Breeds at Poultry Research Institute.

            5.    Growth Promotent and Immunomodulatory effect of deitry supplementation of multi strength probiotic in broilers. 

            6.    Effect of Different feeding regimes on the performance of layers.

 

 

FACILITIES PROVIDING TO THE PUBLIC/FARMER

Poultry Research Institute recently established the following packages/technology/services have been developed and available for farmers of Hazara Region. These services can be utilized by the farmer to improve their poultry production and boost their economics.

        1.    Improved Rural Chicken Breeds (RIR & BA)

        2.    Improved developed Model of Brooding, suitable for local environment. (Model available for demonstration to farmers.

        3.    Water Biochemical and Microbiological testing facility.

        4.    Bacterial culture and Drug sensitivity.

        5.    Poultry Post Mortem Services.

 

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

During the past two years Poultry Research Institute has attained dependable position in the area for its disease diagnosis and research related activities. This is the reason that poultry farmers of not only Hazara division, but from the other areas like Muzafarabad (AJK) also get services from this centre. The technical staff is efficiently involved in providing the best services to the poultry sector.

 1.    During the year 2014 & 2015, besides providing diagnostic services to the commercial poultry sector of the area also disseminated 8030 and 12000 numbers chicks of high producing dual purpose rural poultry breeds to the local community i.e. Rhode island red and black austrolarp. Because existing rural poultry breeds do not economically viable due to low meat and egg production factors.

 2.    Poultry Research Institute has successfully maintained the Gene bank of various local and exotic poultry breeds at the institute.

 3.    The articles published by the Researchers of the Institute were published in the abstract Book of International Livestock & Dairy Poultry Congress held on 16-17 March, 2016.


TRAINING FACILITIES PROVIDED TO THE PUBLIC/FARMERS

National Training Workshop on “Field Epidemiology against zoonoses” organized by Pakistan FELTP-Human/Animal Disease Investigation Project, conducted successfully at Poultry Research Institute Jabba Mansehra.

  2. Surveillance of Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza viruses in Hazara Region of Pakistan during 2013-14.
  3. Effect of different dietary levels of phytase enzymes on serum phosphorus level of cobb and Hubbard strain of broiler.
  4. Comparative evaluation of hatchability traits and fertility of Rhode island Red and Black Austrolarp under local condition of hazara Division.
